The State of Offline Music, 2026
Streaming was supposed to end this. Instead, in the 18 months to June 2026, 65,802 people rated one offline music player on Google Play — averaging 4.67★, from 3,707 different phone models. This is what their ratings and 6,339 written reviews say about the people who still own their music.
1. The capital of offline music speaks Spanish
Spanish-language reviews outnumber English more than two to one. The offline listener isn't a nostalgic niche in the US — they're in Mexico City, São Paulo, Moscow and Jakarta, where data is metered and libraries are personal.
The happiest country is none of the big three: Indonesian reviewers average 4.74★, the highest of any language with 1,000+ ratings. The most critical: Farsi (4.36★) — where background-playback battery restrictions on popular local devices drive the complaints.
2. The rating that refused to move
Across every month with meaningful volume (1,700+ ratings), the monthly average stayed inside a band of 4.65★ to 4.70★ — eighteen months without a single bad month. Offline players don't have outage weeks, price-hike backlashes or licensing losses; nothing external can break your own files. The flattest line in music tech is the most telling one.
3. 3,707 phones, one library
Reviews came from 3,707 distinct device models — flagships to $80 phones. Offline listening's quiet superpower is that it doesn't care what you paid for your hardware: a local MP3 plays identically on all of them. No other music experience is this classless.
4. People review feelings, not features
Of 6,339 written reviews, the word "best" appears in 1 of every 12 — and "love" in 1 of every 18. Feature words trail far behind: ease of use (247 mentions) beats lyrics (112), the equalizer (77) and even "offline" itself (40). People don't praise the spec sheet; they praise how little they have to think about it.
The average written review is just 57 characters. People don't write essays about things that simply work.
5. The honest asterisk
4% of ratings were 1–2★, and the dominant driver is ads in the free version — not missing features. We publish that number on purpose: it's addressed on our Safety page, reported ads get blocked, and 1,945 reviews received a direct reply from the team in this period.
