How to play videos, or just their audio, in a music player on Android

Short answer: open the Videos tab at the bottom of Audify and tap a video. MP4, MKV, WebM, MOV, 3GP and AVI files play there, as long as your phone can decode the video inside. To listen without watching, tap Audio at the top of the player, or choose Play as audio from the video's ⋮ menu: the sound keeps playing and the screen can turn off. Windows Media (WMV) files and videos saved inside streaming apps need a different app.

How to play a video in Audify

  1. 1. Open the Videos tab. It's in the bar at the bottom of Audify, next to Songs. It lists the videos Android has found on your phone and memory card: camera clips, downloads and videos saved from other apps. If the tab shows an Allow button instead, tap it so Audify can see your videos.
  2. 2. Tap a video. It plays full screen. Turn your phone sideways, or tap the rotate button, for landscape. The 10-second buttons skip back or forward, and swiping up or down on the picture plays the next or previous video.
  3. 3. Use the ⋮ menu for the rest. The ⋮ button at the top right of the player has Video queue (what plays next), Play in loop, Playback speed (from 0.5× to 2×), Equalizer and Cast to device. The heart adds the video to Favourite Videos.
  4. 4. Go back without stopping it. Press back and the video keeps playing in a small window on Audify's other screens. Drag it out of the way, use its full-screen button to return to the player, or close it.

How to play just the audio of a video

  1. 1. Choose Play as audio. On the Videos tab, tap ⋮ next to a video and choose Play as audio. Audify plays the soundtrack and shows a still picture from the video instead of the moving image.
  2. 2. Or switch while it plays. In the player, tap Audio at the top or swipe left on the video. Tap Video, or swipe right, to bring the picture back. Playback carries on from the same point.
  3. 3. Turn off the screen. With Audio on, the screen can turn off and the sound keeps playing, like a song, with the controls in the notification.

Which video formats Audify plays

Audify's video player is built on ExoPlayer, the media player Google makes for Android apps, and it uses your phone's own decoders. So two things decide whether a file plays: its file type, such as MP4 or MKV, and the video and sound formats inside it.

Every Android phone can decode H.264 video and AAC or MP3 sound, so a typical MP4 with those plays on any Android phone. H.265 (HEVC), VP8 and VP9 video and Opus, Vorbis and FLAC sound are on Android's list too, and AV1 video from Android 10. Sound in AC-3 (Dolby Digital) or DTS is not on that list, so a film with that kind of soundtrack may play without sound.

If a video can't be played at all, Audify skips it and moves on to the next one in the queue. To play such a file, convert it to MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound, or use another video player.

If a video doesn't show up in the Videos tab

Scan again. On the Videos tab, tap ⋮, choose Scan device for videos, then tap Start scan.

Check the length filter. On the same Scan Media screen, Ignore videos less than leaves out clips shorter than 5 seconds by default. Set it to 0 to list every clip.

Look in Hidden Videos. Videos you hid are listed under ⋮ → Hidden Videos on the Videos tab, and you can unhide them there. How to hide private audio and video files explains how hiding works.

Check the permission. On Android 13 and later, Audify needs the Photos and videos permission. If you chose Select photos and videos when Android asked, Audify sees only the videos you picked, and the Videos tab offers Add more. To change it, open your phone's Settings, tap Apps, find Audify, tap Permissions and allow Photos and videos.

Turned videos off? On Android 13 and later, ⋮ → Disable Video on the Videos tab removes Audify's access to your videos, for people who only want music. Tap Allow on the Videos tab to turn them back on.

Videos saved inside streaming apps are protected files: only the app that saved them can play them, so they never show up in Audify or any other player.

Continue Watching, favourites, playlists and search

Continue Watching. Audify remembers where you stopped a video. Videos longer than 30 seconds that you left partway appear in Continue Watching at the top of the Videos tab: tap one to carry on from the same spot.

Favourites. Tap the heart in the player, or in a video's ⋮ menu, to add the video to Favourite Videos.

Playlists and folders. If your version shows Playlists and Folders tabs on the Videos screen, use them to group your videos. To play videos in random order, open a video playlist and tap Shuffle: the main Videos list and the player have no shuffle of their own.

Search. Use the search icon on the Videos screen. Audify's main search looks through your music, not your videos.

Can Audify save the sound of a video as an MP3?

No. Play as audio plays the soundtrack of the video file itself. Audify doesn't convert videos or save a separate audio file, so listening this way takes no extra space.

If you need the sound as a song, for a ringtone say, convert the video to MP3 with another app or on a computer. Once the MP3 is on your phone, Audify lists it in Songs like any other song, and the ringtone guide shows how to trim it.

Battery, storage and the screen

The screen stays on while you watch. In Video mode, Audify stops the screen from turning off in the middle of a video. Switch to Audio when you only want to listen: the screen can then turn off, which saves battery.

No extra space and no internet. Audify plays your videos where they are stored. It doesn't copy them, and playing them needs no connection.

If the sound stops when the screen turns off, your phone's battery saver is probably closing Audify. The fix is the same as for music: see why music stops when the screen turns off.

On a TV. ⋮ → Cast to device sends the video to a Chromecast or a DLNA TV. The casting guide covers it, including subtitles.

Common questions

Can Audify play videos?

Yes. The Videos tab plays the video files on your phone, such as MP4, MKV, WebM, MOV, 3GP and AVI, and can cast them to a Chromecast or a DLNA TV.

How do I play only the audio of a video?

Tap ⋮ next to the video and choose Play as audio, or tap Audio at the top of the player. The sound keeps playing when the screen turns off.

Does Audify play WMV files?

No. Audify's video player can't open Windows Media (WMV or ASF) files. Convert them to MP4, or use another video player.

Why does a video play without sound?

Its soundtrack is probably in a format your phone can't decode, often AC-3 (Dolby Digital) or DTS in an MKV file. Audify uses the phone's own decoders, so convert the sound to AAC, or use a player that brings its own decoders.

Does Audify have picture-in-picture?

No. When you go back from the player, the video keeps playing in a small window inside Audify, but it doesn't float over other apps. To keep listening while you use another app, switch the video to Audio first.

Does Audify show subtitles?

Not on your phone's screen. When you cast a video to a Chromecast, Audify sends a subtitle file (.srt, .vtt, .ass or .ssa) that sits in the same folder as the video and whose name starts with the video's name.
