How to fix wrong song titles, artists and albums on Android

Short answer: in Audify, tap ⋮ next to the song and choose Edit Tags. Correct the Song Name, Artist, Album, Track Number or Genre, then tap Save. To rename a whole album or artist at once, tap ⋮ next to it on the Albums or Artists tab and choose Edit album or Edit artist. Audify keeps the new names in its own library and writes only a genre change into the file, so other apps may still show the old names.

How to fix a song's title, artist or album

  1. 1. Open Edit Tags. Tap ⋮ next to the song on the Songs tab, on an album, artist or playlist page, or in search results, and choose Edit Tags. On the Now Playing screen, ⋮ → Edit Tags opens the song that is playing.
  2. 2. Correct the fields. Song Name is the title. Artist and Album decide where the song is filed in your library, Track Number is its place on the album, and Genre is the style of music. Song Name, Artist, Album and Track Number can't be left empty, and a genre can't start with a number.
  3. 3. Change the cover, if you like. Tap the pencil on the picture at the top and choose Camera, Photos or Search Online. If Search Online finds nothing, save a picture of the cover to your phone and choose Photos instead.
  4. 4. Tap Save. If you changed the genre on Android 11 or later, Android first asks whether Audify may change the audio file: allow it, or the genre isn't saved. The new names show up in your lists, in search and on the Now Playing screen.

How to rename a whole album or artist at once

  1. 1. Go to the Albums or Artists tab. Every album and artist there has its own ⋮ button.
  2. 2. Tap ⋮ and choose Edit album or Edit artist. A panel opens with the current name and picture. Tap the pencil on the picture if you want to change it too.
  3. 3. Type the new name and tap Save. Every song in that album, or by that artist, moves to the new name in one go.
  4. 4. Seeing “An album with the same name already exists”? Edit album and Edit artist can't merge two albums or two artists. To join two versions of an album, open Edit Tags on each odd song and type the album name exactly as the other album spells it, capitals included. When you save, the song moves into that album. Artists work the same way.

What Audify changes, and what stays in the file

Names are saved in Audify. A new song name, artist, album or track number goes into Audify's own library, and the music file itself isn't rewritten. Everything in Audify uses the new names: your lists, albums and artists, search and the Now Playing screen.

The genre goes into the file. A genre change is written into the song file itself, which is why Android asks for your permission first. If Audify can't write to the file, it says “Your song file does not support editing.”

Other apps may still show the old names. Other music apps, your file manager and your computer read the tags inside the file, and Audify leaves those as they were. To change the file for every app, use a tag editor on a computer, as described below.

Rescans keep your fixes. Audify reads a song's tags when it first adds the song, then keeps its own record. Scan Media adds new songs and leaves the ones you corrected alone. If you move a file to another folder or memory card, though, it can come back with the names stored in the file.

Back up to keep them. Audify's Google Drive backup includes the title, artist and album changes you made, and restoring it puts them back on the same songs, on this phone or a new one. Back up your music to Google Drive shows how. Without a backup, uninstalling Audify or clearing its storage removes your changes, and the files show their original tags again.

If a name you fixed changes back by itself, email feedback@audifyplayer.com with the song, your phone model and your Audify version. We can't promise a fix or a date, but those details are what let the app team look into it.

Why songs show the wrong title or an unknown artist

Every music file carries tags: short text fields for its title, artist, album, track number and genre. MP3 files keep them in ID3 tags, and FLAC and OGG files in Vorbis comments. When a file arrives on your phone, Android reads its tags into the phone's media library, and music players, Audify included, show what they say.

Files that were downloaded, ripped from old CDs, forwarded in a chat or recorded on a phone often have empty or wrong tags. When a file has no artist tag, Android files it under an unknown artist, which is why some songs show unknown where the artist should be. A song with no title tag usually shows its file name instead, such as track01.

When one album shows up twice, look at the names. If some of its songs carry a slightly different album name, such as Greatest Hits and Greatest Hits (Remastered), fix those songs with Edit Tags as shown above, and they join the rest.

Lyrics depend on these tags too. Audify looks lyrics up by the song's title and artist, so fixing those two often brings up the right lyrics. The lyrics guide explains the rest.

Fixing hundreds of songs

Audify edits one song at a time, plus whole albums and artists by name. You can't select several songs and edit them together, and Audify doesn't fill in tags for you.

So start big: one Edit album or Edit artist fixes every song in it. Then tidy the odd songs one by one.

For a large, messy collection, a tag editor on a computer is faster. A desktop tag editor such as Mp3tag edits hundreds of files at once, numbers tracks and can look album details up online. Fix the files on the computer before you copy them to your phone, because Audify reads a song's tags when it first adds it. How to copy music from a computer to Android covers the copying.

Common questions

How do I change a song's name in Audify?

Tap ⋮ next to the song and choose Edit Tags, type the new name in Song Name and tap Save. On the Now Playing screen, the same option is in the ⋮ menu.

Why does my music say unknown artist?

The song's file has no artist tag, so Android files it under an unknown artist. Open Edit Tags, type the artist and tap Save: the song moves to that artist in Audify.

Does Edit Tags change the music file?

Only for the genre, which Audify writes into the file after Android asks for your permission. A new song name, artist, album or track number is saved in Audify's own library, so other apps and computers may still show the old ones.

Can I edit several songs at once?

Not by selecting several songs. To rename every song in an album or by an artist, tap ⋮ next to it on the Albums or Artists tab and choose Edit album or Edit artist. For hundreds of files, use a desktop tag editor before you copy them to your phone.

Why won't Audify let me rename an album to a name that already exists?

Edit album can't merge two albums, so it refuses a name another album already uses. To move songs into that album, open Edit Tags on each one and type the album's name exactly as it is spelled: the song joins it when you save.

Will my changes survive a new phone or a reinstall?

Yes, if you back up to Google Drive from Audify: the backup includes the title, artist and album changes, and restoring it puts them back on the same songs. Without a backup they are lost, and the files show their original tags again.
