Why do my songs show up twice on Android, and how do I remove the extra copy?

Checked by the Audify team · How we check

Short answer: A song that shows up twice in Audify is almost always saved twice on your phone, for example after copying the same music again or keeping it on both phone storage and an SD card. Play one copy, open ⋮ → View Info on the Now Playing screen and check its file path, size and format. Then remove the copy you don’t want with ⋮ → Delete from device on the Songs or Folders tab, or choose Hide Song to keep the file but take it out of your lists. Audify for Android has no automatic duplicate finder, so you choose which copy goes.

Why a song shows up twice

Audify lists files, not song names. Audify reads Android’s media library, which holds every audio file on your phone and SD card. It doesn’t merge two files that share a title, so two copies of a song are two rows on your Songs tab.

The music was copied twice. Copying a music folder from a computer again, or restoring a backup into a new folder, leaves the first copy where it was. A file saved twice often gets a (1) at the end of its name.

It’s on phone storage and on an SD card. A folder copied to both places shows up twice. The Folders tab lists Internal Storage and SD card separately, so you can see both.

It’s two versions of the song. An MP3 and a FLAC of the same track, or a song saved by a messaging app and again in your Music folder, are different files, so both appear.

Step 1: Find out which copy is which

  1. 1. Put the copies side by side. On the Songs tab, tap Sort by above your songs and choose Name. Songs with the same title now sit next to each other.
  2. 2. Open the song’s info. Play one copy, then on the Now Playing screen tap ⋮ and choose View Info. Song info shows the Duration, Size, Format, Sample Rate and File path of the copy that’s playing.
  3. 3. Read the file path. A path that begins /storage/emulated/0 is phone storage. A path that begins /storage/ and then a code such as 1A2B-3C4D is usually an SD card. The folder names after that, such as Download or Music, tell you where the copy came from.
  4. 4. Compare the two copies. The same size and format means an exact copy, so it doesn’t matter which one goes. A different format or size means a different version: keep the one you prefer, for example the FLAC over a small MP3.

Step 2: Delete the extra copy

  1. 1. Start from the Songs or Folders tab. Inside a playlist, the menu offers Remove from Playlist instead. That only takes the song out of the playlist, and the file stays on your phone.
  2. 2. Tap ⋮ next to the copy you don’t want, then Delete from device. Delete from device removes only the file of the row you chose. The other copy stays.
  3. 3. Confirm the delete. On Android 11 and later, Android shows its own dialog asking you to let Audify delete the file. On older versions, Audify asks you to confirm and warns that the file will be deleted permanently.
  4. 4. Remember that it’s usually permanent. On most phones a deleted song can’t be brought back. If your More tab shows Recently Deleted, a deleted song waits there for 30 days and you can restore it. If it doesn’t, check the file path before you delete.

Or keep the file and hide the copy

Hide Song takes one copy out of Audify. Tap ⋮ next to the copy and choose Hide Song. It leaves your lists, shuffle and search, and the file stays on your phone. Audify hides that file only, so the other copy stays visible.

Hide a whole folder when the copies sit in a folder you want to keep, such as a backup folder or a messaging app’s audio folder. On the Folders tab, tap ⋮ next to the folder and choose Hide.

To bring a copy back, go to More → Hidden files, open the Songs or Folders tab, tap ⋮ next to it and choose Unhide. How to hide audio and video files covers every option.

Clean up duplicates across the whole phone

  1. 1. Open Files by Google. Files by Google is Google’s free file manager for Android 8.0 and later. Many phones come with it; if yours doesn’t, you can get it from Google Play.
  2. 2. Tap Menu, then Clean. Find the Duplicate files card and tap Select files.
  3. 3. Keep the file marked Original. Files by Google marks the original file with an Original badge, and Google recommends keeping it. Select the copies you want to remove.
  4. 4. Move the copies to the Trash. Tap Move x file(s) to Trash, then confirm. Audify notices the change by itself. If a removed song still shows, go to More → Scan Media and tap Start scan.

Keep duplicates from coming back

Copy each folder once. When you copy music from a computer again, choose to replace or skip the files that are already on the phone instead of keeping both. How to transfer music from a computer walks you through the copy.

Keep your music in one place: on phone storage or on the SD card, not both.

Check your playlists after a clean-up. If a song is missing from a playlist afterwards, add the copy you kept back to it.

Common questions

Why does the same song show up twice in my music player?

Because it’s saved twice on your phone. Music players list every audio file Android knows about, so two files of the same song make two rows. Delete or hide the copy you don’t need.

Does Audify have a duplicate finder?

Not on Android: you pick the copy to remove with View Info and Delete from device. For a phone-wide clean-up, Files by Google lists duplicate files. Audify for Mac lists a duplicate finder that compares audio fingerprints, for music kept on a Mac.

If I delete one copy, will the other one go too?

No. Delete from device removes only the file of the row you chose. Check the file path in View Info first, so you know which copy you’re deleting.

Can I get a deleted song back?

Only if your More tab shows Recently Deleted: deleted songs wait there for 30 days. Otherwise the file is gone from your phone, so copy it back from your computer or a backup.
